S K Pump Industries (SKPI) manufactures the India Mark 2 hand pump at our works in BIT Step Industrial Estate, Mesra, Ranchi. We are a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licence holder and supply complete pumps, spare parts and riser pipes to PHED divisions, government contractors, NGOs, panchayats and private buyers across Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal.
The India Mark 2 is the most widely used deepwell hand pump in the world. It was developed in India in the 1970s with UNICEF support for rural drinking water, and today it serves villages across India, Africa and Asia. One pump is designed to serve a community of around 300 people.
What is the India Mark 2 hand pump?
The India Mark 2 is a heavy-duty, lever-action deepwell hand pump. A long handle drives a chain over a quadrant in the pump head, which lifts a string of connecting rods. At the bottom of the borewell, the rods move a plunger inside a cylinder, and water is lifted up the riser pipes to the spout with every stroke.
It is built for places where the water level is too deep for a suction pump, and it is strong enough to keep working through thousands of strokes a day at a busy village water point.

Main parts of an India Mark 2 hand pump
- Head assembly: handle, axle, bearings, chain and quadrant that turn the handle movement into an up-and-down pull on the rods.
- Water tank assembly: sits under the head and carries the spout.
- Stand (pedestal): fixed in the concrete platform over the borewell.
- Riser pipes: 3 m lengths that carry water up from the cylinder.
- Connecting rods: 3 m lengths that link the handle to the plunger.
- Cylinder assembly: cylinder, plunger, cup seals and foot valve, where the pumping actually happens.
SKPI supplies every one of these parts separately as well. See India Mark 2 spare parts and accessories.
Where the India Mark 2 is used
- PHED rural water supply schemes and tube-well programmes
- Schools, anganwadis, health centres and panchayat water points
- NGO and CSR drinking-water projects
- Private tube wells for farms, factories and housing
For borewells where the water level is deeper than about 50 metres, choose the India Mark 2 Extra Deepwell hand pump instead.
Corrosive or acidic water? Choose the right riser pipe
Standard India Mark 2 pumps use galvanised iron (GI) riser pipes and rods. In normal water they work well, but where the groundwater is acidic (a pH below about 6.5) the galvanising is eaten away, the pipes rust and the water turns red. For these sites we recommend our PVC riser pipes with stainless steel couplings, which do not corrode and are much stronger at the joints than plain PVC pipes.

Frequently asked questions
How deep can an India Mark 2 hand pump lift water?
It is designed for pumping lifts of about 10 to 50 metres. For deeper water levels, use the India Mark 2 Extra Deepwell hand pump.
How much water does an India Mark 2 give?
Typically about 1 cubic metre (1,000 litres) an hour at 20 metres head, and about 0.8 m³ an hour at 30 metres.
How many people can one India Mark 2 serve?
It is designed for a community of about 300 people, or around 30 households.
Is the India Mark 2 the same as the India Mark 3?
They share most above-ground parts. The India Mark 3 uses a larger open-top cylinder and riser main so the plunger and foot valve can be pulled out without lifting the riser pipes, which makes maintenance easier.
