- Above ground: handle assembly, axle, ball bearings, spacers, chain with coupling, quadrant, head cover, stand (pedestal), flange and bolts

- Cylinder parts: cylinder body and caps, plunger (pump bucket), cup seals (washers), upper and lower valves, foot valve, sealing rings

How to tell which part has failed
- Water comes only after many strokes, or the handle drops without resistance: usually worn cup seals or a leaking foot valve in the cylinder assembly.
- Output is low even with fast pumping: worn plunger seals, or a leak in the riser pipes.
- Handle is loose, knocks or squeaks: worn bearings or axle in the head assembly.
- Water is red or brown and tastes of iron: corroded GI riser pipes and rods. Consider changing to PVC riser pipes.
- Handle moves freely but no water at all: a broken connecting rod or a disconnected rod joint.
Why cheap spare parts cost more
An India Mark 2 at a busy water point is pumped thousands of times a day. A soft rod, a badly cut thread or a poor rubber cup seal can stop the whole pump, and every breakdown means a mechanic, lifting tools and days without water. The Rural Water Supply Network’s Stop the Rot reports (2022) found poor-quality parts behind early failures of almost every hand pump component, from riser pipes and rods to cylinders, seals and bearings.

Choosing riser pipes for corrosive water
Galvanised iron riser pipes and rods work well in normal water, but where the groundwater is acidic (pH below about 6.5) the galvanising is eaten away and the pipes rust. In those areas:
- PVC riser pipes with square (trapezoidal) threads do not rust and cost less than GI pipes. The square thread is much less likely to break at the joint than a V-shaped thread.
- PVC riser pipes with SS couplings add stainless steel ends at the joint, which is where plain PVC pipes are weakest. They are the most durable option for corrosive water. See PVC riser pipes with SS couplings.

Yes. SKPI is a BIS licence holder for IS 15500, and our parts are made to standard India Mark 2 dimensions, so they fit any standard India Mark 2 hand pump.
